Tomorrow Finland will join NATO
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced today (Monday) that Finland will become the 31st member of NATO tomorrow.
"Tomorrow we will welcome Finland as the 31st member," Stoltenberg said, explaining that the Finnish flag will be raised tomorrow afternoon at the NATO headquarters in Brussels. Stoltenberg pointed out that "this is indeed a historic day," stressing that this is the "fastest" process of joining a country in the history of the modern alliance.
In response to a question about the fate of Sweden, which Turkey has so far objected to joining, Stoltenberg expressed optimism, adding, “I am fully confident that Sweden will also become a member. And the priority for (NATO) and for me is to ensure that this happens as quickly as possible.”
The situation is more sensitive for Sweden, which still faces objections from Ankara. Ankara accuses Sweden in particular of harboring Kurdish fighters from the "PKK" and "People's Protection Units", which Ankara classifies as "terrorist" organizations, and of refusing to extradite wanted persons. The final word in this regard belongs to the Swedish judiciary.
Finland and Sweden have announced major military investments since the start of the war in Ukraine, and NATO considers them a strong bulwark on its northeastern side.
