The New York Times loses the golden brand of its official Twitter account because of Elon Musk

The official account of the American newspaper The New York Times on Twitter, on Sunday, lost the golden mark designated for verifying corporate accounts, after a tweet by Elon Musk, in which he accused the newspaper of refusing to pay a financial fee in exchange for keeping this mark, of practicing vulgar "propaganda".

On the other hand, a journalist at Agence France-Presse reported that the golden sign was still present on the official accounts of the newspaper's "world", "travel" and "opinions" pages.

The newspaper's official account has nearly 55 million subscribers.

The loss of the New York Times mark came in the wake of two tweets from the owner of the microblogging site, Elon Musk, in which he called the information published in the newspaper “propaganda that is not even interesting” and called its news ticker “the Twitter equivalent of unreadable diarrhea.”

The disappearance of the official account certificate for the American daily also comes the day after Twitter launched a new licensing program, according to which account holders will only obtain a certificate in exchange for a financial fee.

Twitter intends to collect eight dollars a month from individuals for this certificate, and this value will rise to $ 11 if it passes through the Apple App Store, while the cost of the certificate for companies reaches one thousand dollars a month.

In response to a question by Agence France-Presse, a New York Times spokesperson confirmed that the newspaper still refuses to "pay to keep our official accounts authenticated," and that it will not compensate its journalists who wish to pay financial allowances for verifying their own accounts unless it is "necessary for their work."

Currently, no other American or foreign media outlet, nor any other person who has declared that they will not pay to maintain their account certification, such as basketball player LeBron James, has lost their blue or gold badge.
