Netanyahu postponed the dismissal of the Minister of Defense
The Israeli Broadcasting Authority (Radio Kan) reported that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu postponed the dismissal of Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, which he announced more than a week ago, in view of the complex security situation.
The authority quoted a political source as saying: “Given the developments in the security situation, Netanyahu will consider the matter of the defense minister later.”
There was no immediate comment from the Prime Minister's Office.
The announcement of the dismissal of the defense minister on March 26 came after Galant's public demand for Netanyahu to stop the plan to amend the judicial system, which sparked unprecedented public protests.
Some Army reservists said they might decline the call-ups as a protest.
In the end, Netanyahu acquiesced and suspended the disputed amendments to allow talks with opposition parties to reach a consensus.
Political sources said there have been efforts in recent days to end the rift between Netanyahu and Gallant, whose possible dismissal has raised concerns within the ruling Likud party, the armed forces and among Israel's Western allies.
Two Israeli officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that Galant and Netanyahu will visit two military bases on Monday evening to congratulate the soldiers on Easter. In general, details of such visits are not published in advance for security reasons.
